mark borgions (1967) received a graphic design degree at sint lucas antwerp in 1989. he built his carreer as a graphic designer, working at a few smaller agencies before landing a job as lead designer at the belgian advertising agency duval guillaume. he worked on major brands and campaigns, further developing his design, typography and motion design skills.
his designs were always very illustration driven, and it did not take long before he realised his focus should be not only on graphic design, but also — and maybe even more so — on illustration and animation. in 2002 he started handmade monsters to do exactly that.
since then, he has worked on design packages for all major television channels in flanders, and created still and motion visuals for many national and international campaigns and clients.
in his homeland of belgium, he is perhaps best known for a personal project he started with a couple of friends from the advertising world. all eager to do something more permanent than a campaign, koen brandt (composer / audio producer), philip maes, paul wauters (both writers) and mark borgions released their first audio-play-packaged-in-a-picture-book in 2007. with a new title every year since, the series heerlijk hoorspel has become a major hit in flanders. more than once, the release was the best selling children’s book in flanders of that year. with over 20 titles released to date, heerlijk hoorspel is still going strong, with humorous adaptations of classic fairy tales, folklore tellings and world literature alike. every title in the series is over 60 minutes long, has a cast of a-list actors, a fully orchestrated music score, lively sound effects and a 44 page book full of dynamic illustrations.
in 2021, and with the added talent of koen van deun, the team started a new audio play series er-waren-eensjes, this time presenting a modern take on the über-classic fairy tales. in this series, the books also provide a reading text of the tale, accompanied by an online soundboard.
mark borgions is also the official illustrator of dag sinterklaas, the television series created by hugo matthysen to coincide with the celebration of saint nicolas, patron saint of children. for the series, he has illustrated five books, including an activity book and a search-and-find book.
among other books, he has also illustrated several young reader titles for zwijsen in the netherlands and simon and schuster in new york.
to an international audience, mark borgions is best known for his more adult oriented pop culture work. he has worked with major entertainment brands and is a regular force in the los angeles pop gallery art scene. he has created official artwork for properties like monty python, rick and morty, ghostbusters, focus features, fortnite, mighty morphing power rangers, mario bros, x-files, electronic arts, toon boom animation, and many, many more.
he has received numerous accolades, including merits and distinguished merits from 3x3 magazine, shortlist nomimations and an award of excellence from communication arts, several american illustration wins, graphis design silver award, a gold award and honorable mentions, world illustration awards longlist and shortlist selections, illustration west merits and a silver award, a second place in illustration at the print awards, and a society of illustrators show selection.
in 2013, his animated music video for the stan lee cole song separated was accepted to more than 20 film festivals and received over 10 awards.
he is proudly represented worldwide by Lemonade Illustration Agency.
